Google Drive backup in Amunta is optional. The app does not need it to run your ledger. When you enable the feature, Amunta creates an encrypted backup file before uploading it to your space in Google Drive.
The backup helps you recover your ledger after changing phones or losing local data. It does not turn Amunta into an always-online cloud app, and your income and expense screens do not become connection-dependent.
From your phone to Google Drive
- Amunta builds a package containing the database and the references needed for restoration.
- The package is encrypted with a password before it leaves the device.
- The app uploads the encrypted file to the Google account you choose.
- During restoration, Amunta downloads the file, verifies it, and unpacks it on your device.
Manual and automatic backups
From Settings, you can enable backups, choose an account, review the available copies, and restore a specific one. Amunta retains up to the 30 most recent backups so files do not accumulate indefinitely.
What about receipt photos and attachments?
Your ledger and its attachments are local-first. When Drive backup is enabled, Amunta can recover missing attachments from the linked backup. If you do not enable Drive, you can still create invoices, add photos, and read every local record.
Keep the password
Encryption protects the backup, but it also means that restoration requires the password you chose. Neither Amunta nor Google can read the backup or recover its contents without that password, so keep it in a safe place away from the backup file itself.
Which actions need the internet?
Uploading a backup, listing remote backups, downloading one, and restoring remote attachments need a connection. Creating income, expenses, debts, invoices, budgets, and reports does not.
Deleting app data is not the same as deleting a backup
Clearing Amunta's data from a phone does not automatically delete a backup stored outside the app or in Google Drive. This separation preserves the backup as a safety net. If you want to remove every copy permanently, you must also delete the external backups yourself.
Who is this feature for?
Google Drive backup suits people who want an easier way to restore their ledger on a new phone while keeping a device-first model.
